SMITH, Kenneth Wayne (Ken) - It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Kenneth (Ken) Wayne Smith, aged 83, of Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia, on Monday, May 5, 2025. A devoted father, papa, grandpa and friend, Ken will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Born in Kitchener, Ontario on November 13, 1941, to the late William Murray Smith and Marie Alyce Smith (Clark) of Ontario. He was predeceased by his two brothers Bob and Murray. He is survived by his loving children: Peter (Keri) of Dartmouth, Lisa (Dale) Whynot of Hammonds Plains and Shelly of Sackville. Ken was a proud and adoring grandfather to Ella and Camryn—his cherished “apples of his eye"—and found great joy in cheering them on at their ringette games. He also took immense pride in his grandsons, Connor, Rowan, Bailey, and Keegan, never missing an opportunity to support them at their hockey and ball games. Ken served in the Canadian Armed Forces Naval Division for 37 years, retiring in 1996 as Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class. In recognition of his exemplary service, Ken was awarded the Order of Military Merit by the Governor General in 1989. His service included postings on several naval vessels, including the Cornwallis, Bonnie, Sioux, Fundy, Fraser, Restigouche, Assiniboine, Gatineau, Margaree, and Terra Nova. One of his final deployments was aboard the Protector during the Persian Gulf War from 1990 to 1991. During his three decades in Enfield, Ken was an active community member. He contributed to the Enfield Lions Club, the Royal Canadian Legion, and managed his son’s softball team. While living in Calgary, he was a member of the Calgary Commissioners and the Freemasonry – Grand Lodge of Alberta. Upon returning to Halifax, he worked with Steele Chrysler, where he enjoyed shuttling vehicles. Throughout his early years Ken had a passion for sports playing golf and squash. Ken's legacy of service, dedication, and love for his family will be fondly remembered and deeply cherished. Our family would like to express our sincere appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff of the QEII Health Sciences Cardiology Department 6.2 and the Cardiac Care Unit for their exemplary care, compassion and kindness during Ken’s stay with them. A Celebration of Life of will take place on Monday, May 19th, at 1:00pm at the Bedford Legion, 1772 Bedford Highway, Bedford, Nova Scotia. The Legion will perform a Military Service from 1:00 – 1:30pm, followed by a reception. (Harbourside Regional Crematorium)
