In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
JUKES, Andrew John Kemball (Budge) - Born January 1, 1920, died peacefully in his sleep on February 8, 2008 at home in Parksville, B.C. Survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Olwen, devoted son Andrew and daughter Jane, daughter-in-law Kathy, and adoring grandchildren Mark (Amanda), Jeff, and Andrea, great grandson Jackson and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his sisters, Betts Douglas and Rosemary Woodward. Budge's childhood was spent in Vancouver and his early schooldays at St. George's and later at Trinity College in Ontario. A dedicated officer in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War, having initiated his training and service in Canada. In 1942, he was seconded to the Royal Navy serving in Europe, and North and West Africa on corvettes. After the War, his business career, prompted by his love of maritime, involved him in shipping operations on the B.C. west coast with Union Steamships, Tidewater Shipping and Capilano Shipping. He then became President of Coal Harbour Marina in downtown Vancouver and the Pacific Marina Group. It was during his many happy and formative years at the marina that he is fondly remembered as Head `Wharf Rat', an endearing role bestowed upon him by the tenants and boat owners by whom he was so much admired and respected. Friends and family, both young and old, are reminded of his wonderful sense of humour, engaging story-telling, gifted talent for art and painting and his love of the Big Bands. A true gentleman in every sense of the word, Budge was a man of great fortitude, abiding faith and, above all, undying affection and devoted loyalty to his beloved Olwen. A Celebration of Life will be held for his Island friends at his home in Parksville on Saturday, March 1st and a Memorial Service will be held in Vancouver on Monday, March 3rd at 3:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Anglican Church (Kerrisdale), W.37th Ave. and Larch Street. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Society or charity of choice would be greatly appreciated. (The Victoria Times Colonist 19 Feb 2008)

Excerpt from a letter from Andrew Jukes to his parents written 15 Feb 1942: “Harry & Editha managed to get me out safely with the cake etc., which by the way was very popular, even with the ship’s dog I might say. We have a dog here on board called “Little Joe”. I couldn’t tell what kind he is though.
He has a great time on board, gets his run everyday and sits up for Pay Parade, we give him a piece of paper and he runs off and hides it somewhere. He finds it rather difficult getting up the steel ladders. He just sits at the bottom and barks until somebody lifts him up to the next deck. At Action Stations the other day he appeared on deck complete with life preserver and all.
He was two hours adrift this morning though, he went ashore with some of the Ratings last night and he had quite a time finding the ship again. The funny part was yesterday he received a whole pile of Valentines from dogs and cats on other ships”.
