In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
MITCHELL, Robert Gary - passed away unexpectedly on February 22, 2025 at the age of 84 in Victoria General Hospital. Gary, as he was known, was born in Vancouver and grew up in the Marpole area where he attended David Lloyd George Elementary, Point Grey Junior High and McGee High School. Gary graduated from UBC with an Electrical Engineering Degree in 1962 and was a member of the Royal Canadian Navy from 1959-1965. In 1964 he married his wife Lynne (nee Donaldson) and they started their married life in Victoria before he retired from the navy to join BC Hydro and start a family. In 1967 Gary received his Professional Engineer Certification and with his family moved with BC Hydro to Prince George, Terrace, and Prince George again before finally transferring back to Victoria, where he retired in 1997. Gary was an active member of the BC Hydro Power Pioneers, Esquimalt Curling Club, West Shore Lions Club for 35 years, Legion for 21 years, and the Country Cousins for more than 30 years as well as other square dance clubs. He was known for his tireless service to these organizations along with his love for his family and travel. He lived a very full and busy life even in his later years. Gary was predeceased by his parents Bob and Shirley Mitchell, and his wife of 56 years Lynne Mitchell with whom he is now re-united. He is survived by his daughter Darlene (Barry) and son Donald and daughter-in-law Michelle, grandchildren Erin and Kaitlyn Darby, and William and Adele Mitchell. He will also be greatly missed by his sister Dawna Gowing, his sisters-in-law Beverley Unsworth and Rhonda Locke and their families as well as many friends.
A celebration of Gary's life, has been planned for Saturday, April 19th at 2 pm at First Memorial Funeral Services, 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria.
