Maurice (Moe) Ash, C.D.

Died: 29 Oct 2014, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

 

ASH, Maurice (Moe) - Age 83 of Porter's lake, passed away peacefully at Parkland on October 20, 2014. Born in Portland, Bonavista Bay, N.L., he was a son of the late William and Ruth (Hancock) Ash. A career Canadian Naval Communicator he joined the RCN in 1949 retiring in 1976, serving the majority of his career on the east coast. He retired from a second career as a Purolator Courier in 1993. Moe was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 161, Gaetz Brook, where he was a charter member. He was also a life member of the the Atlantic Chief's and PO's Association. He served many years as an executive with the Naval Communicators Association, and on the reunion committee. A community minded individual, Moe was a founding member of the Lake Echo Fire Department and the First Lake Echo Scout Troop, where he was the first Scoutmaster. A long-time member of St. Anne's Parish in Lake Echo, he served many terms on parish council, and was ready to volunteer for any task, which he would do with a smile. He also served terms as a trustee for Lakeview Schook, Porter's Lake. Survived by children, David (Patty), Hampton, N.B.; Daniel (Janette), Kingston, Ont.; Janice Thompson (Bob), Rusagonis, N.B., Paul, Montreal; Que.; grandchildren, Amy, Jesse, and Willie Ash, Olivia and Matthew Ash, Casey and Annie Thompson and Kyla Sepp. "Uncle Ash" will be missed by his family in Nova Scotia while "uncle Maurice" will be missed by those in Newfoundland. Predeceased by his loving Barbie, wife of 60 years (April 2014); son, Peter (July 1983); all his siblings Jim, Ruth, Dick, Gen, Don, Nell, Phoebe, Ed, Cal and Dolly. Resting in Atlantic Funeral home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, where visitation will be held from 2-04 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, October 23. The funeral service will take place on Friday, October 24 at 11 a.m. in St. Anne Mission, 3293 Highway No. 7, Lake Echo. Reception and interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.
