McKYE, Kenneth - (British Empire Medal, RCNVR) - Peacefully at the Toronto East General Hospital on Monday, March 24, 2003, Ken, in his 86th year, beloved husband of Marjorie (née West). Dear father of Carol (Jim Sharp) and Brian (Frieda). Brother of the late George, Norman and Ida. Devoted Grampa of Don (Jenn), Austin (Kim), Todd (Kathy), Brett (Mary) and Jason (Kathleen). Loving great-grandfather of Kaleigh, Meghan, Emily, Katelyn, Courtney, Danielle, Brody and Kassidy. He will also be missed by his many nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received at the Giffen-Mack "Danforth" Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 2570 Danforth Ave. (at Maint St. subway) on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service at the Church of St. Columba and All Hallows, 2723 St. Clair Ave. East, Scarborough on Thursday at 10 a.m. Visitation at the church after 9 a.m. Interment Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Citation for award of the British Empire Medal:
McKye, Kenneth, Electrical Artificer Fourth Class, V60391, British Empire Medal, RCNVR - Awarded as per Canada Gazette of 21 April 1945 and London Gazette of 20 March 1945.
"This Rating displayed untiring efforts and prompt action in risking his own life in effecting the rescue of survivors from HMCS Clayoquot. His personal disregard of his own life in going over the side to assist survivors on board was undoubtedly instrumental in saving the lives of men immersed in very cold water."
Note: EA Kenneth McKye was serving in HMCS FENNEL at the time of the rescue of HMCS CLAYOQUOT'S crew.
