IRWIN, Jack Deckman - (King of the One-liners has passed away) Jack passed away peacefully at Saskatoon City Hospital. He is loved and remembered by his brother, Bob; nephew, Bob (Marie) Irwin; special great niece, Wendi and great, nephew, Rob; special great great nieces, Jasmine and Kaelyn; as well as many numerous nieces and nephews. Jack was predeceased by his parents, Nellie Irene and Charles F. Irwin; his wife, Lillian; brother, Charlie; sisters, Helen and Dorothy; and infant brother, Harold; sisters-in-law, Jean and Doreen; brother-in-law, Bill. Jack served in the Royal Canadian Navy as a petty officer and after his release he worked with his father at Irwin Shoes. He bought the store from his parents and worked there until retirement. Jack was an avid sportsman and was a member of the Saskatoon Golf and Country Club and Greenbryre Country Club. He loved to curl and was a long time member of the Legion and the Saskatoon Bridge Club. He was a lifetime member and the oldest member of the Lions Club in Saskatchewan. He also was a Cub Master for many years, taught Sunday School, and was a High C Councilor with his wife at Third Avenue United Church. The Memorial Service will be held on Monday, March 24th, at 2:00 p.m. from the Third Avenue United Church (304 3rd Avenue N). In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lung Association of Saskatchewan (1231 8th Street, Saskatoon, SK S7H 0S5). Jack's brother Charlie Irwin also served in the RCNVR.
Jack Irwin was born 1916 in Kindersely, Saskatchewan later moving to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He joined the RCNVR early on in the war at the same time as his brother Robert ‘Bob’ Irwin. Jack served the majority of his time on the HMCS Prince Robert and later on HMCS Lambert as a Submarine Detector.
