William Charles (Charlie) Snell

Marine Engineer, RCN / C.A.F. (Navy)

Born: 22 Jun 1944, Kingston, Ontario, Canada

Died: 24 Feb 2025

SNELL, William Charles (Charlie) - slipped his earthly bond on 24 Feb 2015 & went to his eternal home to join parents Gordon & Gwendolyn Snell, brothers Arthur & John, & stepfather Eldon Gliddon.

Born in Kingston, ON June 22, 1944 & being eldest of 6 children, he quickly adapted to role of caregiver & protector. His formative years were lived in Clinton, ON where he started his working days with a newspaper route, doing yard maintenance, & eventually becoming a farm hand in his early teens. His passions were skating & hockey, & when not working, he spent long hours at the local arena & on frozen ponds. At 17, he joined the RCN & proudly served his country as a stoker from 1961-73.

During that time, he met & married the love of his life- Pearl Louise (Long); & they raised their family living 51 of their 59 years of marriage in the home that Charlie built for his family. Eventually, his love of family took precedence over being away at sea, & he retired from the navy. He then went to work in various aspects of the construction industry, & felt privileged to be part of many major projects in Halifax & NS. He operated the crane that set the Sailor’s Salute Statue in place in 1991; & worked on the Halifax Boardwalk. Later, he came out of retirement to assist instructing adults in the operation of cranes at the Operating Engineers Training Institute in Falmouth, NS. Charlie & Pearl shared a strong Catholic faith that shaped their lives & molded their beliefs into positive attitudes. This faith guided Charlie through his travail with a courage, grace & dignity that gave strength to each of us.

Charlie leaves to rejoice in a life well-lived, his loving wife Pearl, his sons Gordon (Clara)-Roachvale & Eddy-Lochaber, daughter Charlene Pickrem (Barry)-Lower Sackville, beloved grandson Evan Snell-Queensport, sister Coreen Levin-BC, brothers Bob (Sherry) & Brad (Debbie) -Clinton, ON, many extended members of the Long & Snell families, nieces & nephews.

Burial to take place at a later date in St. Thomas Cemetery, Salmon River, Guysborough Co, NS.

Special thanks go out to all of Charlie’s medical teams in all facets of his care; & especially to the wonderful staff at Veteran’s Memorial who made his last months so meaningful; & to whom he entrusts the care of his beloved Pearl. In his own words, “God bless & keep you!” They both thrived in your care. (Arbor Memorial)
