Richard Webster Dodds

Born: 22 Nov 1925          Died: 24 Feb 2025

 

DODDS, Richard Webster - Predeceased by his wife, Lois (2012); son, Douglas (2008); and son-in-law, Bob Hillhouse (2022). Survived by son, David (Anna); daughter, Jill Hillhouse; daughter-in-law, Lesley Stodart; grandchildren, Katherine (Andrew) and Mark, Ian and Evelyn, Stewart (Claire) and Duncan (Julia); and great-granddaughter, Elowyn. Leaving high school, Richard served as a pilot during WWII with both the RCAF and RN Fleet Air Arm. He also served with the RCN during the Korean conflict, after attending the University of Toronto (Victoria, 1948) and Queen's University (1950). An avid outdoor enthusiast, he and Lois lead numerous whitewater canoe trips in northern Ontario and travelled extensively in the Arctic, both by canoe in the southern tundra and dogsled in the high arctic and permanent ice. From biking in France, hiking in Tibet, standing in Tiananmen Square, to skiing in Ontario as original members of Caledon Ski Club, they loved the adventure. Richard was a patron of the performing arts in Toronto with multiple board memberships, including his favourite - The Patron's Council of the National Ballet of Canada. He was a lifetime member of Corporation, Trinity College, and a lifetime member of the 78th Highlanders, York Garrison. At his request, cremation has taken place. His ashes will join those of Lois in the wilderness of Quetico. Donations may be made to Sunnybrook Veterans Centre. (The Globe and Mail 08 Mar 2025)
