Robert Alvin Schultz

Born: 20 Nov 1939, Edmonton, Alberta

 

Died: 11 Jan 2025

 

SCHULTZ, Robert Alvin - Robert passed away peacefully at home on January 11, 2025.

 

Robert was predeceased by his son Michael and is survived by his partner Anne, son Gregory (Erin), granddaughters Clair (Dan), and April, great-granddaughters Sophia and Rosie, brother Alfred and sister Babs.

 

Robert was born in Edmonton and spent his first six years living on the family farm at Ranch 10. The family moved a number of times, living first with their maternal grandmother in Peachland and then in Kaslo, Riondel, Nelson, and Summerland, where Robert completed secondary school.

 

Robert graduated from Summerland High School with honours; he was class valedictorian and he received the Verrier Trophy, emblematic of the best all-around student. His honour marks qualified him for the Royal Canadian Navy Cadet officer training program, enabling him to continue his education at UBC. He spent eight years as a Sub-Lieutenant in the Navy, at the same time graduating from UBC with a Bachelor of Science and a Masters Degree in Education.

 

After his Naval career he taught high school math and science in the Vancouver School District for 30 years. He was a dedicated teacher and he treasured the many heartwarming letters he received from students and parents.

 

Before retiring Robert took a position as Visiting Professor of English at Tokushima Bunri University in Japan. During this three year posting he made life long friendships and excelled in his studies of the Japanese language. Robert was a skilled linguist, mastering Russian at university and continuing to study both languages throughout his life.

 

He was an inquisitive life long learner, exploring a variety of activities including photography, hiking, biking, canoeing and ballroom dancing.

 

Robert will be remembered as a kind and gentle man.
