FORBES, John - 84, of Nanaimo, BC, passed away on November 15, 2024, in El Centro, California. Born on January 23, 1940, in Vancouver, John lived a life defined by family, music and the joy of sharing his talent with others.
John was predeceased by his beloved wife, Cathy, and is survived by his loving partner, Laurie Bailey. He leaves behind a legacy cherished by his sons: David (wife, Karen) and Glen (wife, Sandy). He was a proud grandfather to Krystyn, Ashlie, Tanner, Jevan, Claire, Cullen, and a great-grandfather to Avery.
A gifted pianist, arranger, conductor and teacher, John's passion for music shaped his life and inspired countless others. He and brother Larrie formed the Brothers Forbes, which performed throughout Victoria, most notably during their long-standing residency at the Strathcona Hotel's Old Forge in the 1970s. In recognition of their contribution to music, the Brothers Forbes were inducted into the Victoria Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.
John served in the Canadian Forces for 26 years with the Naden band from 1960 -1969, 1987 - 1994 and as Regional Music Director for all cadet bands in BC from 1994 – 2004. After moving to Nanaimo, John continued to share his love of music with the Nanaimo Concert Band as a musician and later as the band's director. He also contributed to the Mid-Island Community Band, Mood Swings, Jimmy Cannon's Valley Jazz Band (El Centro) and would frequently entertain various audiences during happy hours and holiday celebrations. His talent, kindness, and commitment to his craft left a lasting impact on his community and all who knew him.
John treasured his family and was always involved in his son's lives. His musical gifts rubbed off on the whole family, with David, Tanner and Cullen all spending time as recording and/or performing artists. He was an avid golfer, and was happiest walking or riding the course with his sons and grandchildren.
John's life was filled with melody, harmony, and a deep appreciation for the joy that music brings. He will be remembered not only for his talent but also for his warmth, humour, and unwavering dedication to family and friends.
A celebration of life will be held in Spring 2025, where friends and family will gather to honour John's remarkable journey. Details will be communicated closer to the date. (The Victoria Times Colonist 19 Dec 2024)
