DACOMBE, Arthur Edgar (Ed) - After a brief illness and with great courage and a strong faith in Jesus Christ, Ed passed away surrounded by his family. He will be loving remembered by Gerry his best friend and wife of 54 years and their family of whom he was most proud, sons, Darryl, Ron (Lorraine), Len (Janet) and daughter Lorraine (Al) Dewar; and grandchildren, Jeremy, Daniel, Chrissie, Allan and David. He will also be missed by a very special cousin Helen (Ray) Wheeler and many special close family members and friends. Ed had a special gift of making friends and developing lifelong relationships. Ed was born in Winnipeg, grew up in West Kildonan and spent four years in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. On his return he worked for 13 years at the CNR before joining Johnson Controls where he worked for 31 years, retiring as Construction Superintendent in 1986. His career at Johnson Controls was very special to him, he made many life long friends and enjoyed many trips, some as far afield as Alert, NWT. Ed and Gerry lived in Rivercrest for 53 years where he was very community minded. He served 20 years as a councillor and Deputy Reeve for the RM of West St. Paul, and eight years as a member of the Board of the Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg, where he continued to volunteer until his illness. Ed’s faith was very important to him all of his life. He was instrumental in helping to build the Rivercrest United Church where he served faithfully as an elder for many years. Since the late 1980’s, Ed continued to practice his faith at St. John’s Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder, chairman of the Board of Managers, and enjoyed singing in the choir. Ed was happiest when he was busy. He loved to travel, including trips to England and Australia visiting his cousins, and also winter trips to Texas. Other favourite hobbies included woodworking with his friend Earl Haines, gardening, and carpentry. Ed treasured time spent at the cottage in Ingolf as it strengthened his relationships with his children and grandchildren, enjoying watersports, card games, and working on many memorable projects. Family and friends were always welcomed at the cottage. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Pat Harris, and the Oncology Clinic and the dedicated staff of N3-W at Concordia Hospital for their compassionate care of Ed and his family. A celebration of Ed’s life will be held on Tuesday, October 23 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, 251 Bannerman and will be conducted by his close friend, Rev. Ken Innes. Interment will follow at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Ron, Len, Daniel and Allan Dacombe, Alan Dewar, and Murray Dunn. Honorary pallbearers will be Darryl, Jeremy, and David Dacombe, Orval and Rod Beaudry, all of Ed’s nephews, Bruce Sinclair, Ray Wheeler, Ron Jardine, Jack Cooper, Don Couch and Larry Sawa. In lieu of flowers, friends who so desire may make a donation to St. John’s Presbyterian Memorial Fund, 251 Bannerman, Winnipeg, R2W 0T8, CancerCare Manitoba, ON109-675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, R3E 0C9 or a charity of their choice. “We will love, miss and remember you always Dad” Arrangements entrusted to Klassen Funeral Chapel, 338-0331.
