Walter James Smith

Lieutenant (R), RCNVR

Born: 27 May 1921          Died: 04 Jun 2015

SMITH, Walter James - P.Eng, Six days ago, Wally (Dad, Poppa) blessed us with his last words. "I had a wonderful life. I had a wonderful family." He was the devoted and loving husband of Jacqueline, loving father of Suzanne (Jan), Douglas, Jennifer (Laurie) and Graham (Monica), step-father of Luc and Emmanuel, grandfather of Karin (Joe), Andrew, Kelly, James and Matthew and great-grandfather of Maia. For Wally, son of Bertram Smith and Mabel Barber and brother of Harold (predeceased), life started in Tara and Dutton, Ontario. In 1942, he graduated from Queen's University with honours in Electrical Engineering. From 1942 - 1945, he served as Lieutenant (Radar) in the RCNVR on assignment for the Royal Navy, participating in the landings at Sicily, Salerno, Normandy and subsequent operations in Holland. Wally enjoyed a fulfilling career at Montreal Engineering (Monenco) from 1946 - 1986 where he managed power-generating projects in Canada, Southeast Asia, South America and Africa. A man of many talents - brilliant engineer, accomplished pianist and baritone, master woodworker and gifted orator and writer, Wally did indeed live a full and beautiful life. We will all miss him dearly. Memorial service will take place at 12 noon on Monday, June 8, 2015 at the Mount Royal Funeral Complex 1297 Chemin de la Forêt, Outremont, QC H2V 2P9 514-279-6540 (The Toronto Star 06 Jun 2015)
