BOUTILIER, Joan Audrey (née McKENZIE) - age 87, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2024.

Born on December 15, 1936; she was a daughter to the late Myrtle (Watters) and David McKenzie. Joan was born and raised in Englehart, Ontario. She moved to Nova Scotia at the age of 19 to join the Navy and served as WREN in the late 1950's and early 1960's. While in the Forces she met her future husband.

Joan and David settled in Lower Sackville to raise their family. She worked at the Post office, Sackville Downs, and finally at the Halifax County Correctional Centre, where she finished out her career. In addition, Joan was very involved with the community, volunteering at school events, participating in the winter carnival and was a life member of the Calais Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. After the passing of her husband she spent the next decade travelling throughout North America and off the continent to the UK and Iceland, often with her sister Vera as her companion. In her retirement she enjoyed time at the cottage and also volunteered with Meals on Wheels, delivering meals to people throughout the community until her health declined. In later years Joan survived cancer before developing and eventually succumbing to dementia.

Survived by daughters Laura Boutilier and Donna Boutilier, sisters Donna Smith and Leslie McKenzie of Toronto, and Heather (Ted) Bell of Calgary, brother Ron, Ontario, in-laws Patsy Zwicker, Virginia Bouchard, Vincent and Diana Boutilier, and many nieces and nephews.
