Ross was the son of Warren Earle Trethewey (1895-1971); grandson of Schoyler and Ida Trethewey. Ross married Norma Canning of Port Wallace, Nova Scotia in 1949. Ross was serving in NOOTKA at the time of his marriage (Crowsnest Magazine Jul 1949). When Ross' father died, Ross was living in Kingston, Ontario.
In the May 1952 issue of the Crowsnest he is listed as having been rated LSLR2 with a surname of Trethewey.
