Norman volunteered to join Royal navy in 1942 at 18 years of age with his mothers permission. He moved to Adelaide South Australia in 1967.
After the Second World War Norman had a building career, as a carpenter, site foreman and later as a building estimator (In England and Australia). Norman married Ruby, from Newtown in Wales, in 1954, in a church at Newtown. They later had son Philip. Norman was involved with the RSL (Returned Service League) after he retired while living in Adelaide South Australia. He was secretary of one RSL branch for a while. Norman, at a later stage of his retirement joined the Beach vale sub-section, Naval Association of Australia and was still a member up until about a year before he passed away.
