In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
LAUGHTON, Hugh Osman - age 77, resident of Thunder Bay, passed away peacefully in Hospice at St. Joseph's, Thursday November 29, 2001. Born September 5, 1924, Fort William, Hugh served overseas with the Royal Canadian Navy during W.W.II. After the War, Hugh worked in mechanical logging and drove streetcar and trolley. November 30, 1948 he married Elsie Johnson, 1951 joined the R.C.A.F. and was posted all over Canada and in France. Upon returning to Fort William he worked as a heavy equipment operator, an Airport Commissionaire, and at H.M.C.S. Griffin. With Elsie, he owned and operated residential apartments, the "Patterson Park Chip Truck" and "The Family Diner", Syndicate Avenue. Hugh was an avid fiddle, harmonica and guitar player and enjoyed bowling, curling, swimming, cross country skiing and especially a good joke. Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 6, H.M.C.S. Griffin, Zion Lutheran Church and Masonic Lodge. Hugh is survived by his wife Elsie, daughter Colleen Laughton (David Eryou), son Stewart all of Thunder Bay and daughter Kelly Laughton (Lee Downer) of Toronto. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. He was predeceased by his parents Samuel and Edith Laughton, sisters Luella McKay, Verna Allen and Florence McDermott; brothers Clifford, Tiny and Loy Laughton. Funeral services will be held Monday December 3, 2001, 11:00 A.M. , Zion Lutheran Church (corner of Marks & Walsh Streets), Pastor Les Skonnord officiating. Internment to follow in Conmee Cemetery. Visitation with family will be Sunday, December 2, 7-9 P.M. , Blake Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Northern Cancer Research Foundation would be greatly appreciated. A tree will be planted in memory of Hugh Laughton in Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual dedication service Sunday, June 23, 2002. (The Thunder Bay Chronicle Journal 30 Nov 2001)
