He was predeceased by his brothers Jim and George and sister Rosemary. Rus grew up with his three brothers, homesteading with his father John during the depression in Big Bear, Saskatchewan. Rus along with his brothers Bob and George enlisted in the military to serve our country during WWII. While serving in the Canadian Navy Rus suffered a number of injuries and he was in a coma for a year. Rus's strength of character enabled him to recover from the coma and for most of his life to overcome his war injuries. In 1947, under the guise of picking up a friend from a house party, Rus was introduced to dark haired beauty. She served him chocolate cake and pickles and he was smitten. On December 24, 1948 Rus and Bunny were married and just over a year later Ron was born. In 1951 the family moved to the 401 Hotel in Burnaby begin their life on the West Coast. While working in construction, building the All Saints Church on Royal Oak Avenue in Burnaby, Rus purchased a house at 6842 Royal Oak Avenue that became the family home for 57 years. When the church construction job ended Rus found work at a Vancouver warehouse and while there was advised that there were jobs available at Kelly Douglas in Burnaby. He went to Kelly Douglas to apply and was told to go home and get his working clothes and report back that afternoon. He worked there for the next 31 years. Rus became very involved in the community and as very active in the South Burnaby Men's Club and Burnaby Minor Hockey both serving on executive boards and coaching and was a Legion member. Rus and Bunny loved camping in their trailer and traveled throughout Canada and Alaska fishing and sight seeing.
