SCHMIDT, Garry - The family announces with sorrow the passing of Garry Schmidt on October 4, 2024, in Sudbury at the age of 83 years. Son of the late Rudolf (Rudy) and Grace Schmidt (née Cochran). Survived by Claire (née Leblond), his loving wife of 58 years and his children Stacey Juusela (Mark) and Derek Schmidt (Melissa). Uncle to Laurie Boyer (Rick). Predeceased by his sister Lois Burns and nephew, Brian. Sadly missed by his grandchildren Brett Harper (Jasmine), Sarah, Gavin, Joel, and Carter Schmidt.
As a young man, Garry served in the Royal Canadian Navy and in the Royal Canadian Air Force before joining the Metro Toronto Police Force. Wanting to raise his family in Claire's hometown they relocated and he joined the North Bay Police Force in 1970. A life long learner, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Laurentian University in 1987. Garry had diverse interests including martial arts, history, gemology, travel, fishing, and the Green Bay Packers. He will be remembered for his love of family, dry wit, determination and his eagerness to share his knowledge.
The family would like to thank the staff at Health Sciences North and St. Joseph's Villa for their care in the last months of his life.
Garry was especially grateful for his treatment at the Northeast Cancer Centre and the Supportive Care program.
In keeping with Garry's wishes there will be no visitation.
Cremation services to be provided by Simple Wishes of the North, Sudbury.
