MENZIES, Donald William - With sad hearts we announce the passing of Donald William Menzies on July 17, 2024.
Don was born October 18,1934 in Hudson Bay, SK to John and Stella Menzies. He is survived by his wife Pat Lench. His passing is also mourned by his daughters, Kathy (Roger), Eleanor (George), Beverley (Dave) and son Robert (Tanya). He also leaves behind stepsons, Gordon and Donnie. Also survived by 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, a step-grandson and a step-great-granddaughter. He will also be missed by his sister Isabell (Stan) and brother Gerry (Norie), as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Don was predeceased by his first wife, Fran, his parents, his sister and brother-in-law Shirley and Gerry Sieffert, brother Kenny, grandson Daniel and numerous other family and friends.
Don joined the Navy at the age of 17 and completed his five year tour. He mined in Snow Lake, MB and BC and did winter driving before settling in Thompson where he and Fran raised their family and Don worked for INCO for 30 years. He was a talented athlete who enjoyed playing and coaching hockey. His numerous trophies showcased his abilities in bowling, curling, softball, and golfing. Many of Don’s friendships were forged on the golf course. He scored a hole in one three times, with the last time being at the ripe old age of 70 years old. Don missed his times on the golf course terribly when it became impossible for him to continue. Don was also a gifted artist. Up until a few years ago he also did the daily puzzles (crossword, crytograms etc.) in the Free Press. He and Pat had a wonderful trip to Scotland where he golfed and visited the Menzies Castle. He had a wonderful sense of humour and loved to tease and tell tall tales. Don was a huge fan of pizza from his favourite pizza spot, Santa Lucia's on Henderson Highway, where he enjoyed many a slice with his grandson James Lench.
His children remember how Dad along with Mom made our home a loving and welcoming place not just for us but for our many friends several of whom considered them second parents. We have many good memories of family trips, camping, family gatherings and playing games together. He loved deeply and we love him and miss him greatly. (The Winnipeg Free Press 25 Jul 2024)
