In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
THERIAULT, Lionel Joseph (Roger) - It is with profound sadness we say goodbye to Roger after a brief illness on Saturday, June 29 2024.
Roger was born on Jan 21 1933 in Rimouski, Quebec to Aurore (Michaud) (1982) and Thomas Theriault (1962). He was the 8th of 9 children.
Roger had an adventurous spirit. In 1950, as a young man he joined the Royal Canadian Navy. He was able to travel the world many times over, and made friends wherever he went. He served on many vessels during his time in the Navy but perhaps most notably served on the HMCS Kootenay. He was awarded a certificate of appreciation in recognition for courageous acts and devotion to duty as a crew member during the terrible explosion at sea in 1969. Roger achieved the ranking of Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class before his retirement in 1980. He was awarded The Canadian Forces Decoration in 1962, the 2nd Clasp to The Canadian Forces Decoration in 1984 and a special Service Medal for recognition of service in support of North Atlantic Treaty Organization in 1994.
After his retirement from the Navy, he joined the Canadian Coast Guard and continued his sea travels for several more years. Roger, when not at sea, made Halifax his home, for most of his adult life.
He was an avid card player and could always be counted on to beat you at crib or poker, where he showed no mercy- even to his grandsons. Roger spent the last 10 years of his long life in the Parkland Community in Clayton Park, where he developed even more friendships and was known to have a very social presence. Again, his love for a good game of cards was widely known.
Roger is survived by his son Richard (Judy), son-in-law Gerry Gosling, grandsons Alexander Theriault (Angelena Kuhn), Benjamin Theriault (Briana Kelly) and Cameron Theriault (Abbey Smith). Roger is predeceased by his wife Helen (Beck) (2018) and his daughter Linda Theriault (2024).
As per Roger’s wishes, the family will hold a private grave side ceremony followed by a celebration of life at a later date. He will be interred in Hillside Cemetery in Lunenburg, NS.
Donations can be made in Roger’s name to Halifax Hospice. (J A Snow Funeral Home)
Ships served in: HMCS KOOTENAY - Roger was serving in KOOTENAY as a P2WS at the time of the explosion.
