In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
MILLAR, Herbert Howard - Herb grew up in Ville Saint-Laurent with his parents Howard and Mabel (Moffat) Millar and brothers Ralph and Norman. He served overseas (all seven seas he'd like to say) with the Royal Canadian Navy and trained with the Combined Operations service for the invasions that led up to and included D-Day, landing on Juno Beach. Returning home, he met Gladys Cookman who became his wife and life partner of 71 years. They spent summers in the Laurentians, and made many trips west to visit their grandchildren and friends. As a proud WWII veteran, he attended combined op reunions with Gladys and volunteered at Ste Anne's Hospital. His love of sports, the outdoors and creative expression was passed on to their children Edgar (Irene), Gyan (Lucie), Scott (Linda) and Marlene (Christopher) and grandchildren Madhu, Shambhu, Mira, Devon (Louise), Elayne, Eden (Rodrigo) and Kira. Favourite expressions were "use your imagination" and "draw big". His smile, his kindness and his love for his family, now including 10 great-grandchildren, will live on in beautiful memories. The family thanks Michelle Smith and her caregiving team, Veterans Affairs Canada and the CLSC for supporting Herbert in living on his own into his 102 year, and the palliative care unit at the Jewish General Hospital where he died peacefully. A private service will be held at the National Field of Honour later this spring. (The Montreal Gazette 25 Mar 2023)
