RUSSELL, David John - It is with great sadness that the loved ones of David John Russell announce his passing on June 25, 2024. Born in the village of Kirton, Lincolnshire, England on May 28, 1929., he was a son of the late John and Fanny Russell. He attended the local village school until his 14th birthday. David was employed in the potato industry until joining the Royal Navy in 1946. Married his wife Doreen in England whilst on exchange duty and enjoyed 63 happy years until her passing in 2019. On retirement from the Navy in 1974 he was employed as a Social Worker with the Province of Nova Scotia, Halifax city and county for 20 years. Very active in sports, he captained both East Coast Navy Soccer and Rugby Teams. Qualified as a Boxing Referee and Judge, served as President of Hartlen Point Forces Golf Club and was Club Captain for two years. He also served many years with the Royal Canadian Naval Benevolent Fund. Since 1961 he was very active in the Masonic Fraternity serving as Master of Cornwallis Lodge in 1973 and Woodlawn Lodge in 1995. District Deputy Grand Master in 1985, Grand Representative for New South Wales and ACT since 1981. Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Bedford 95 for over 50 years and was also a member of the Royal Order of St. George. As a Dartmouth resident for many years he enjoyed the friendship of so many neigbours and friends. Dave was an incredible man who lived an equally incredible and fulfilling life in which he, along with Doreen, enjoyed an abundance of wonderful world travel and adventures. How we will all miss those fabulous, sometimes hard to believe, never ending takes of a long life so very well lived. Dave will be sadly missed, but so fondly remembered by the many, many lucky enough to have known him especially the Wilnoff, O’Boyle and Ross family’s, but none more so than his cherished nieces and nephews whom he absolutely adored, Julie, Helena, David (his namesake) and Roger along with many other family members across the pond.A special thank you to the staff at Camp Hill 5th Floor for their care and compassion. A Masonic Service followed by a funeral service will be held 2 pm, Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Burial in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. (Arbor Memorial)
