KIRTON, Joseph Irving Ernest (Churchill) - Today, on what would have been his 83rd Birthday, we think fondly of our partner, father, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother and friend to so many!

Churchill came from a large family of 14 children! As a young child, he started paying attention to the rocks in his surroundings, as his father worked as a miner, and so began his passion for searching for gold. He also served in the Royal Canadian Navy on a destroyer for a while, was a taxi driver and also a mechanic. But throughout his entire life, he was constantly looking for gold, even mining from BC to Ontario; becoming a licensed prospector. He passed along his knowledge of what to look for to his grandchildren; as well as instilling in his grandchildren the importance of their family history. He was a man of small stature, but had the largest heart and a mind full of invaluable knowledge to pass along to his grandchildren. Church was by far the largest fan of both the Jets and the Blue Bombers. All year round he was cheering on both teams! Church was featured in Gerald Khoel's book, Portraits of the North; Gerald having sketched the most truest portrayal of Church's facial features, those features also landing him roles in a few movies.

Church is survived by Connie, his companion of 40 years, his children, Shon, Bobbie and Tammy; grandkids, Jamie-Jone, Kim, Kyle (Steph), Michael, Charlotte, Erin (Arik), Chance, Summer and Kiara (Daytona) as well as his great-grandkids. (The Winnipeg Free Press 12 Jun 2024)
