Fire Fighter, C.A.F. (Air)

HAYES, Frederick (Rick) - a man of many tales and laughter, was born on April 16, 1950, in Ottawa, Ontario. With profound sadness, we announce his sudden passing at Comox Valley Hospital on April 17, 2024, with his family by his side.

Rick's journey began in 1967 when he boldly joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a young boy, seeking the thrill of the unknown. Throughout his illustrious military career, he wore many hats - quite literally, considering the sailor's uniform. From navigating the skies as an Air Bos'n to diving deep as a ships diver and battling blazes as an Air Force firefighter. Rick's tales of daring would make even the most seasoned adventurer blush.

But it wasn't just his professional escapades that made Rick a legend. With a memory sharper than a sailor's wit, he never forgot a face or a name. Oh, the stories he'd tell! Promising to keep “a long story short”, although they never were and those listening didn’t seem to mind.

During his retirement, Rick could be found tearing up the open road on his beloved Harley, the wind whipping through his hair (what little of it remained). And as a die-hard Toronto Maple Leaf’s fan, he knew the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat all too well (mostly the latter, but hey, that's hockey).

Rick leaves behind a legacy as colorful as his personality. In his 41 years of matrimonial bliss with the love of his life, Joy, he fathered two incredible kids, Frederick Todd (Nicole) and Alison Dawn, and became the proudest Grampy to Gemma-Dawn Marie, Frederick Renshaw (Shaw), and Carter David. Loved brother to Sharon (Rick) and Bonnylee (Alex), cherished son-in-law to Rosemary, and as a brother-in-law to Kevin (Colette), Gail (Ken), and Dawn (Andy). His nieces and nephews saw him as the epitome of a fun-loving Uncle, showering him with love and admiration.

Predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Monica Hayes, and father-in-law Jack Harrison. Rick leaves behind a vast network of family and friends who will deeply mourn his loss.

Though he may have departed this world, Rick's spirit lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and anyone who's ever shared a laugh, a drink, or a tall tale with him. So, here's to you, Dad - may the seas be calm, the roads be open, and the Leaf’s win the Stanley Cup (one can dream, right?). Fair winds and following seas. You'll be missed more than words can say, but your laughter will echo through eternity. ‘Ready, Aye, Ready’

Cremation has occurred. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for May 11, 2024, at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 50 – Fred Gies, located at 524 Belmont Avenue W, Kitchener, Ontario, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
