William M. (Mike) Dohm

RCN / RCAF / C.A.F.

Born: 07 Jul 1944          Died: 21 Mar 2024

DOHM, William M. (Mike) - It is with much sadness that we announce Mike's death. Mike was born in Halifax, N.S. to Isobel (nee Brown) and William N. Dohm. Mike died peacefully at Victoria Hospice after having received excellent and compassionate care from the hospice nurses and physicians and the PRT. Thank you to Dr. Troughten, Mike's GP, and the community health nurses.

Mike was a very caring, thoughtful person who gave generously of his time and diverse knowledge and skills, from preparing family members' tax returns to guiding his children and stepchildren, always with a respect for, and encouragement of their interests. Mike lived his life with a quiet devotion to the Catholic faith and was comforted by Father Marc's visit to our home to administer the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Mike attended Oaklands Elementary, St. Louis College, Belmont High School and UVic (B.A.). He joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served with integrity from 1963 to1994, retiring as a RCAF Finance Officer with the rank of Major. Highlights of his career included postings to Gypsumville and Europe. Mike was proud to have served. Subsequently, he enjoyed working at the B.C. Ministry of Forests (1994-2003).

Mike's greatest joy was having been a father and stepfather to seven children. He appreciated the phone calls, texts, and visits with all his children in the last two weeks of his life. Their love is a testament to, and reflection of, his love for them.

Mike had many hobbies and interests: short-wave radio (he contacted 127 countries!), growing vegetables and fruit trees, and camping. Mike's daughter Karen recalls camping trips with her dad and her sister, and from these experiences her love of nature grew. Michelle has childhood memories of travelling in Europe, viewing old castles and landmarks, which led her to share her father's love of history. Mike's daughter Song Fei recalls, "Dad taught by example and guided me through all obstacles that I have faced."

Mike is survived by Denyse, his wife of 25 years, and daughter Song Fei; daughter Michelle Dohm Sullivan (Patrick), and granddaughter Maya; daughter Karen Griffiths (Joseph) and grandson Simon. Mike is also survived by his stepchildren: Karen Quirk, Christine Reece, Lynda Reece, Michael Reece and their families; brother-in-law Ken Hardy; nephew Chris (Cheryl) and their family, and nephew David, as well as extended family members.

Mike was predeceased by his father William Dohm (1969); his wife Sandra MacDonald Dohm (1998); his stepbrother Dale Mumford (2012); his mother Isobel Mumford (2018), his much-loved younger sister Margaret Hardy (2019) and his stepfather Victor Mumford (2022).

There will be a service for Mike in July when family and friends will gather to remember and celebrate his life. There will be a notice in the newspaper in advance. (The Victoria Times Colonist 04 May 2024)
