In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
MARSHALL, Harold Albert - Cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and son, Harold Albert Marshall, age 83, of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, passed away at the Dartmouth General Hospital, with family by his side, on February 29, 2024.
Born in St. Jean, Quebec, he was the son of Dennis and Rhoda Marshall.
Harold grew up in St. Jean and Montreal, where he developed his life-long love of the Montreal Canadiens. Second only to the love he had for his family, he enjoyed coaching his beloved Canadiens from the spectator area of the old Montreal Forum and later, after leaving Montreal, from his armchair wherever he called home – from Porter’s Lake, NS, to Ottawa, ON, to Lower Sackville, NS, to Stirling, ON, and for the past 5 years, from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
Harold joined the Navy in 1958. He met the love of his life, Patricia Casey, in 1963, while posted at Stadacona. They married shortly thereafter and remained best friends and soul mates for more than 60 years. Following their marriage, they moved to Montreal, where they lived until 1972, when they moved back to Nova Scotia.
Harold had a long career with the phone company, beginning with MT&T and through its transition to Bell Aliant, then Bell. Always striving to do better for himself and his family, Harold enrolled in part-time studies at Saint Mary’s University in 1984. Over the next 8 years, he studied evenings and weekends until proudly earning his CMA designation in 1992.
Always ready to lend a hand to family, friends, neighbours, or strangers, Harold served his community in many ways. From his work with the United Way, to his many years coaching hockey and softball, to his unwavering support of friends and family during times of illness or need, Harold left his mark on so many and made the world a better place for being in it.
Harold is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Patricia; son, John (Janet) and their children, Carly (Lorenzo) and Alexander; daughter, Carolyn (Shaun O’Neill) and their children, Sheamus and Riley; son, Tim (Jocelyn) and their children, Adam, Mitchell, Matthew, and Braden; son, Roddy (Valerie Ward) and their children Sam, Jack and Luke; sisters, Barbara Anne Marshall-Poizer (Dick) and Meryl Lochhead (Robin); brother, Robert (Marion); sisters-in-law, Norma Marshall, Deanna Buchanan, Susan Hunt (Wayne), Marilyn Keller (Art), Judy Myatt, Wendy McNeil; brother-in-law, Michael Casey, and their families.
He was predeceased by his parents, Dennis and Rhoda; brother, Michael; brothers-in-law, Frank Buchanan, Bert Myatt and Billy Casey; and sister-in-law, Marina Marshall.
There will be no visitation or funeral by request.
A celebration of life will follow this summer. We will fire up the barbeque, cook up Big Harry’s, share stories, and raise a dark rum (or two) to Harold.
We are very grateful for the excellent care Harold received at Dartmouth General Hospital over the past year. From his initial cancer diagnosis, to weekly blood collection, to his final days receiving palliative care, the DGH took great care of him. Special thanks to Dr. Jill Lawless, Dr. Christina Morgan, Dr. Stephen Duke, Dr. Chad Williams, Dr. Brenna van Tol, and too many wonderful nurses, lab techs, porters, and others to mention. Thank you to each and every one of you.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Harold’s memory may be made to the Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation or Hope for Wildlife.
