MITCHELL, Arthur Blake - 89, Oyster Pond, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2013, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Blake was born July 5, 1923, in Oyster Pond. He was the eldest son of the late Morris and Emma (Blakeney) Mitchell. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Marion Webber and brother, Garnet. He is survived by daughter, Christine, Oyster Pond; sister, Una Hingston, Dartmouth; as well as several nieces and nephews. As a young man Blake worked for Imperial Oil in Dartmouth. In 1942 he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve, where he served as chief stoker on HMCS Preserver, operating in the Battle of the Atlantic for the duration of the war. Afterwards he and his father owned and operated a sawmill. He later became an electrical, plumbing, and heating contractor. Blake was known for his easygoing gentle manner, generous spirit, and dry sense of humour. He was a founding member of the Oyster Pond and Area Volunteer Fire Department, and belonged to St. John's Anglican Church and Four Harbours Legion (East Ship Harbour). He had a passion for genealogy and was a respected historian in his community. He spent many hours researching and compiling information on the computer. In earlier years he loved to travel with relatives and friends to explore historical sites of interest. A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 25th in St. John's Anglican Church, Oyster Pond at 2 p.m. Rev. Tricia Ingram, Rev. Mike Foley, and Pastor Aubrey Deslatte officiating. Committal will be in St John's Anglican Cemetery with a catered reception to follow in the Oyster Pond Fire Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John's Church, Oyster Pond, as well as Lake Charlotte Heritage Society. The family wishes to thank the staff of Dartmouth General, 3 East, those who gave assistance over the last few weeks, and the many others who have been friends to Blake over the years, especially the 'Coffee Crowd'. We wish to also acknowledge the compassionate care of Emergency Health Services.
