Natalie Jane Gordon Percival (née Carruthers)

Motor Transport Driver, W5617, WRCNS

Died: 14 Mar 2024

PERCIVAL, Natalie Jane Gordon (née CARRUTHERS) - Natalie (Jane Gordon Carruthers) Percival passed peacefully in hospital with family by her side on March 14, 2024. She had recently celebrated the 100 age milestone!

She is survived by her three sons Doug (Sheila), Eric (Janet), John (Beverley), eight grandchildren (Kimberly, Jennifer, Wendy, Eric "Jr", Lianne, Caitlin, Sarah and Andrew) and 11 great grandchildren.

Our mom was proud of her Kingston roots. The Carruthers family had many interesting tenacles. Politically they ran against Canada's "father", Sir John A. Macdonald, losing by a handful of votes. They had many successful entrepreneurial businesses including the founding of a food wholesale business, National Grocers, which became the largest in Canada, and morphed into Loblaws. The family donated generously to Queen's University helping it to transition from a "college", and build one of the first buildings, Carruthers Hall (engineering), named after the family. She was studious and inquisitive herself, constantly learning new things. Her graduating diploma from Queens University hung proudly in her bedroom.

According to her own legend, she was a renowned driver and always eager to tell (for sure over a hundred times) whoever would listen: "I was assigned to drive the Admiral of the Navy during the war." She continued driving until age 93, with her last car being a Lexus manual stick-shift sports car!

Before the internet she taught herself bridge and enjoyed her bridge groups into her early nineties. She also did lawn bowling, water colour painting, and earlier in life was a golf member at Mississauga Golf Club.

Thank you to the dedicated and caring Parkland Residence staff who helped her. Her friends at Parkland were much appreciated as even in passing they always had a comforting smile, a squeeze of her hand, or an encouraging few words....NICE TOUCH!

An informal family event will happen at a later date. No flowers, thanks. Donations to charities of your choice, if you wish. (The Glove and Mail 16 Mar 2024 / Tuner & Porter Funeral Directors)
