In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
SAMPSON, Joseph Gregory - The family of Fr. Greg Sampson wish to inform his friends in the Maritimes of his passing in Quebec City on January 27, 2024, at the age of 98. He was a son of the late Damien (Dan) Sampson and Charlotte (Lottie) Boucher and grew up in St. Peters, NS. Besides his parents he was predeceased by brothers, Bernard and Gerard and a sister, Veronica. Fr. Greg was a veteran of WWII having served in the Royal Canadian Navy. After serving his country, he attended St. Francis Xavier University and later Willowbrook Seminary in Washington. He became a priest of the Eudist Order in 1954. During his years in the priesthood, he served at Collège St. Anne in Church Point, Collège Sacré Coeur de Bathurst and Elise St. Famille Parish in Bathurst, NB, Charlesbourg, PQ, as well as two parishes in Buffalo, NY. Fr. Greg returned to Nova Scotia in 2008 as assistant pastor in Wedgeport and later Metagan. He retired at the age of 90 and moved to the Eudist Complex in Quebec where he received excellent care. In spite of his numerous priestly assignments Fr. Greg always loved the opportunity to spend time with family and friends in Eastern Canada. He revelled in a good feed, especially lobsters. He was a handyman and he loved the outdoors and the opportunity to fish when at home in Cape Breton. 'Fuggy' as he was affectionally known by his family, was also a bit of a card shark, especially at crib. He knew every relative in North America and often stopped to visit when travelling. Fr. Greg is survived by his sister, Leona Middleton, of Rockdale, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families. He will be sadly missed. There will be a Memorial Mass in St. Peter's at a later date with Interment at the St. Peter's Cemetery.
