In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
WINTER, James Ralph - Died peacefully at home on September 13, 2016 … a few days after celebrating his 60th wedding anniversary. Born March 23, 1930 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he was the only child of Herbert W. Winter and Winifred (Crookes) Winter. After working as a pension consultant in Winnipeg, Toronto, and Vancouver for a few years, he obtained a BA degree in 1957 from Queen's University, where he played hockey and joined the Naval Reserve (UNTD). He went on to do graduate work in Economics at the University of Chicago, where he was fortunate to study under four Nobel Prize-winning economists. In 1966 he came to Acadia University as the Wallace Professor of Economics and Head of the Department. Over the years he taught, or was a visiting scholar, at the Universities of North Carolina, Western Ontario, Laurentian, Duke, Oxford, and Nanjing (China). He also advised various governments on water resource management, constitutional matters (such as the 1970 Maritime Union Study), demographic trends, fisheries management and tax systems. He was a member of the Canadian Economics Association, the Canadian Regional Science Association, and the Atlantic Provinces Inter-University Committee on the Sciences. As well, he was a founding member of the Atlantic Economics Association and first editor of its Collected Papers. Community minded, over the years he coached minor hockey and soccer, assisted with the Boy Scouts, was an elected member of the Kings County School Board, treasurer of the Wolfville Area Inter-Church Council, and fulfilled numerous duties as a member of St. John’s Anglican Church in Wolfville. Self-described as an enthusiastic, moreso than skilled, athlete he played hockey with the Acadia Oldtimers and competitive squash into his sixties before joining the Wolfville Curling Club. He is survived by his beloved wife Jean (Neve); daughters Heather (Dave Murray) and Leah (Martin Vander Baaren); sons David (Tracee Chambers) and Paul (Peggy Webb); grandsons Grayson, Benjamin, Ethan, Isaac, Aidan, Owen and granddaughter Laurel. Cremation has taken place and the funeral was held at St. John’s Anglican Church, Wolfville on Sat. Sept. 17 at 2PM, The Reverend Sandra Fyfe officiating with interment of the ashes in the family plot in the church graveyard. Reception followed. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Flowercart in New Minas or L’Arche in Wolfville. (source: inmemoriam.ca)
