Joseph Barton Watson

Died: 16 Sep 1996, Lethbridge, Alberta

 

WATSON, Joseph Barton - beloved husband of Mrs. Vi Watson of Lethbridge, Alberta formerly of Picture Butte, passed away at St. Michael's Health Centre, Auxiliary Site on Monday, September 16, 1996 at the age of 8O years.

 

Barton is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Viola, his daughter Dorothy Mayne of Colorado Springs, Daughter-in-Law Peggy Watson of Lethbridge, grandson, Doug (Gall) Mayne of Colorado Springs and granddaughters; Brandi Watson and Cori-Jo Watson of Lethbridge and Fernie, B.C., as well as one sister, Ruth Taylor of Lethbridge.

 

He was predeceased by his son Chriss In March 1996, son-in-law Lt. Col. K.T. Mayne in July 1980, brother Harry Watson in January 1985 and his parents Joseph John Watson and Ada Barton Watson.

 

Barton was born in Medicine Hat, but grew up In Foremost, Lethbridge, Shaughnessy, and settling in Picture Butte. He was an avid sportsman and keen competitor - baseball, curling, golf, hunting and fishing. Barton an avid sportsman an competitor - baseball, curling. golf, hunting and fishing. Barton was a life long contributor to the town of Picture Butte's growth, business life and community activities. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, having actively served as a Supply Assistant with the Royal Canadian Navy from 1944 to the end of the war. He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks, also a Shriner and member of the Masonic Order. Barton was Instrumental in Picture Butte's original Curing Club and Picture Butte's Golf Course. He served as a town councilor for Picture Butte and sat on the Picture Butte Hospital Board.

 

Barton's business career started by piling lumber for the Becker Lumber Co. in Shaunessy, to hand shoveling the construction of The Canadian Sugar Factory, to owning and operating "The Inn" cafe, to selling bulk petroleum for BA Oil Company to selling cars (Hudsons) to operating one of the first feedlots in Picture Butte. Barton's Company, Barton Motors successfully had the school bus contract for the county of Lethbridge No. 26 for over 45 years. He sold Barton Motors Ltd. to his son Chriss in 1985 and Barton Motors Ltd. is today still in active operations and thriving.

 

Barton was from the era of a Man's word and handshake meant everything and that was always how his businesses were operated as well as how he lived life.
