MATHEWS, Sydney, T. - Retired National Research Council of Canada – Ship Section, Peacefully on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 in his 96th year with his loving family by his side. Sydney Mathews, born in London, England on May 18, 1923 to the late Thomas Mathews and May (nee Rose). Beloved husband of Joan (nee Standen). Loving father of Kay (Edward Carlo) and Patricia (Malcolm Waddell). Cherished ‘Poppy’ to his grandchildren Robyne Leslie (Paul Bourgeois), Kimberley Leslie (Jesse Schloff), William Carlo, Pamela Lincez and Mathew Lincez (Taessa); and dear Great grandchildren Sophia, Sebastian, Josephine, Aksel, Aurelia and Clara. Predeceased by his dear sister Madge. Sydney’s career took him all over the world which he enjoyed and engaged in the Scientific and technical advancement of Canada’s development and of Icebreakers and Supertankers. He dedicated an early portion of his life to service, as an officer in the Naval Reserve of Canada. He was a proud resident of Rockliffe Park for 46 years where he enjoyed gardening at home with his wife of 73 years and dear family. For 10 years he pursued the perfection of a flat keyboard within his company Equikeys. The family would like to thank the staff of the Garry J Armstrong Long Term Care Home, particularly Marilyn and Eve. Thanks to Lucy Gauthier for her dedicated service as a caregiver as well. Friends are invited to join his family at A Mass of Christian Burial, which will be held at St Margaret Anglican Church, 206 Montreal Rd., on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 3 PM. Interment to follow at The Beechwood Cemetery (280 Beechwood Ave). (Whelan Funeral Home).
