* Note: there are discrepancies on James' date of birth. Depending on the source it is 09 Oct 1950 or 19 Jun 1852.

 

James enlisted in the Royal Navy on 03 Jun 1868 as a Boy Seaman.  On 19 Jun 1870, at the age of 18, he commenced a period of service of 10 years. He served until 28 Jun 1890 attaining the rate of Stoker 1st Class.

 

At the age of 68 James Dupen enlisted in the RNCVR for service during the First World War - one of the oldest sailors to serve in the First World War.

 

He is buried in the Ross Bay Cemetery, Victoria, BC.
