SUTHERLAND, John Francis (Frank) - of Sydney, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Port Hood, NS, he was the son of the late Angus S. and Mary Ann (Chisholm) Sutherland. He is survived by his wife of 50 years Regina (Jeanie) and one sister, Sr. Mary Margaret Sutherland, Connecticut. He was predeceased by brothers, John, Joseph and Donald and sister, Helen. Also survived by two daughters, Susan (Kurt) Pyle, Dartmouth, and Laura (Francois) Lemore, Ottawa; one son Stephen (Christine), Halifax; and five grandchildren, Paul, Terrence and Alexander Sutherland, Rebecca Pylie and Olivia Lemire. There are also many nieces and nephews, especially Mary (Tiny) Sutherland, Louise March, Joan Bison, Anita Aucoin and Debra. Hee is also fondly remembered by his in-laws, especially Leola Leck, Mary and John MacIsaac, Suzanne and John Power, Harold Moss and Ed Langille. Frank was a 1931 graduate of Sydney Academy and received his radio certification after the Second World War. Frank served in the Second World War in RCNVR on the corvette HMCS Prescott (K-181) and was an overseas veteran from 1942-1945. He was a life member of Branch 12 Canadian Legion having joined in 1946. Frank worked for the Government of Canada as a professional radio operator in the telecommunications department. During the course of his career he worked in airports at Sydney, Moncton, Dorval, Sept Isles and Cape Harrison. He worked as a radio officer on HMCS Acadian which is now in the Museum of the Atlantic. He also worked in the early 50s with the Department of National Defence at Victoria Park. He retired from Sydney Airport in 1978. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Holy Redeemer Church, 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, with Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. A reception to follow immediately in the Fr. Stanley Room. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Arrangements entrusted to T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
