HAGELL, Robert Lawrence - Whitney Pier We, the family of Robert Lawrence Hagell, are saddened to announce his passing on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, in Taigh Na Mara Nursing Home, Glace Bay. Born May 5, 1925, in Sydney, he was a son of the late Percy and Pheobe (Cann) Hagell. A veteran of the Second World War, Robert served with the Royal Canadian Navy and was a member of the C. B. Naval Veterans Association. A lifelong resident of Whitney Pier, he was a dedicated member of St. Alban’s Anglican Church, where he served the church in many roles. Until retirement, Robert worked in the Open Hearth at Sydney Steel. He is survived by his children, Dawn (Amar) Menon, Dartmouth, Larry (Sandra), Lunenburg Co., John (Lisa), Radium, BC, Carol (Keith) Ferguson, Sydney and Philip (Colleen), Victoria, BC; grandchildren, Philip, Stephen and Karen Menon, Charlene and Christine Hagell, Mary, Robert and Melinda Hagell, Matthew and Andrew Ferguson and Sarah and Daniel Hagell; and 13 great-grandchildren. Robert was predeceased by his wife, Lillian Ruth (Knott) and a son in infancy. The last surviving member of his immediate family, he was also predeceased by his siblings, Lavenia “Venie” Hagell Myers, Harry, Percy “Gig” and Frederick “Freddie”. Cremation has taken place under the care and compassion of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A private family service will be held at a later date.
