In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
BAKER, David - Sadly, we announce the passing of David Baker, at the age of 84 years, on October 17, 2002. David will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 59 years Gerry; son Les (Lylene) Baker; son-in-law Jack Buchalter (Karen) grandchildren, Steven (Bonnie) Buchalter, Bryan (Kristin) Buchalter, Scott and Andrew Baker; sisters, Clara Litvin and Anne Doctoroff; sister-in-law Judy Baker; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his daughter Pamela Buchalter and brothers, Morris and Cecil Baker. David was a hard working family man. He was employed for 40 years at the Winnipeg Cold Storage, followed by Schneiders and retired from Weidmans at the age of 68. David left home when he was 16, bound for Detroit toward a promising career. Family circumstances brought him back to Winnipeg where he met and married Geraldine Shatsky. David served with the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War, which sent him to Sydney, NS, for approximately two years. During that time, their first child Pamela was born, followed by their second child Les five years later back in Winnipeg. David had many interests, mostly his love of sports as both a participant and a spectator. Over the years he received as many as 56 medals and trophies for his involvement in baseball, curling with the Maple Leaf Curling Club, bowling, snooker and golf. He also loved playing cards and spending afternoons at the casino, otherwise known as the "clinic." His true joy in life was love of his family and friends. He cherished the simple pleasures, everything from visiting with his children and grandchildren, to his Tuesday lunches with friends, to his annual trips to Palm Springs every winter with Gerry. Although his life was shortened by his illness, his spirit was strong until the end. We will miss him dearly. The funeral service was held on Sunday, October 20 at the Etz Chayim Synagogue with the interment at Rosh Pina Cemetery. Pallbearers were Steven and Bryan Buchalter, Scott and Andrew Baker, Phillip Baker and Aubrey Himmelstein. Honorary pallbearers were Harvey Kay, Manny Silverman, Max Rykiss, Harry Fishman, Lou Roseman, Rick Shatsky and Arnold Ross. Donations in Davids memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba (Pamela Buchalter Fund). (The Winnipeg Free Press 26 Oct 2002)
