DEANS, Alfred, A. (Jock) - passed away at Saanich Peninsula Hospital rather unexpectedly after a brief bout of pneumonia. Jock was pre deceased by his lovely wife Mildred Ashton in 1988. Jock is survived by his son John Deans (Jod), daughter Heather Crone (Keith) and his four grandchildren Leanne, Kayla, Gerrick, and Elijah. After retiring from the Royal Canadian Navy in 1970 at the age of 46, Jock and Mildred were the caretakers of Sylvan Acres Baptist Camp on Lands End Road for many years. Jock was involved in many wonderful organizations over the years including Sidney and Saanich Masonic Lodge, Burma Star Association, Victoria BC Branch, The Royal Canadian Legion, Chief Petty Officers' HMCS Naden, Sidney Army and Navy, North Saanich Volunteer Fire Department, as well as a member of Table 11, Club Stonehouse and many others. He had a passion for wood and wood carving and playing his harmonica. He was a great story teller and he always longed for Mexico. A quote from one of Dad's many writings: "My friends in Sidney here (the nicest place in the whole world) ask me if I have been all over the world, I have not, but I listen to people who have. So when asked, I usually answer "Oh yes, I have been all over the world and many other places also." At Jock's request there will not be a funeral service, however Jock's many friends, family and associates are invited to a celebration of life on January 11th 2009 at 2 pm at the Saanich Masonic Lodge, 8105 Derrinberg Road (off of East Saanich Road). In lieu of flowers those who would like to make a donation in Jock's memory may do so by donating to Saanich Peninsula Lodge #89 or a charity of their choice. (Victoria Times Colonist 05 Dec 2008)
