McRAE, Robert Forbes - Professor Emeritus, Philosophy, University of Toronto. BA, Victoria College, MA, U of T, PhD, Johns Hopkins. Lt. Commander RCNVR. Taken prisoner at Dieppe, 1942. Born in Winnipeg to Rev. Duncan and Susan McRae. Predeceased by wife Nora née Beacock, sisters Mary (Cock), Jeanne (Johnston) and Betty (Newman) and lifelong friend George Johnston. Lovingly remembered by daughters Kiloran, Alison and Ellen; sons-in-law Geoffrey Lye and Janek Croydon; grandchildren Sebastian, Madeleine, Tobias, Evan and Amelia. Tenderly cared for by Marife Tantakis for 12 years. Uncle Bob to Darryl and Graham, Bob, Peggy, Andrew, Cathleen, Nora and Mark, Deirdre, Jennifer and Gillian, and 'Uncle Great Bob' to his many great nephews and nieces. Godfather to Elizabeth, daughter of Jack and Aileen Harris; and Jock, son of Peter and Enid Maclachlan. Service on Tuesday, September 25, 2.00 pm, at St. James' Cemetery and Crematorium, 635 Parliament St, Toronto. Robert McRae joined the RCNVR as an OS in 1940. He served in H.M.S. Raleigh (Officer Training Establishment) Training (Mess 27 Collingwood) in 1940 and then in H..M.S. King Alfred (Officer Training Establishment). He was commissioned from the ranks and appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant (Temp.) RCNVR. Appointed a Lieutenant (Temp.), RCNVR he took part in the Dieppe Raid during which his landing craft was shot up and he was captured by German Forces - becoming a POW for the remainder of the war. He was first held in Prisoner of War Camp Oflag Seven B (Germany). Later he was moved to Marlag und Milag Nord Prisoner of War Camp in 1943. He was liberated in 1945. After the war he was appointed as a Lieutenant RCN(R). He served in HMCS York as Commanding Officer (UNTD) 1947. He was appointed a Lieutenant-Commander, RCN(R) seniority 01 Jan 1948.
