In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
HEANS, Robert Pattison (Shakey) - was born on April 10, 1931, in Saint John, NB. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy on January 21, 1949 and served until September 25, 1964. He moved to Victoria, BC, and served on various ships. He left for Korea aboard HMCS ATHABASKAN, the Second ATHABASKAN, from August 1951 to August 1952. While he was there, he spent some of his leave time entertaining children at the local orphanages with some of the other men aboard the second ATHABASKAN. He was awarded service medals on April 30, 1952, and Canadian Forces Decorations on February 23, 1961. Following his time with the RCN, he went to work in HMC Dockyard. Robert, Bob to his workmates, served thirty-five years as a rigger and retired in 1986. He married Ethel Isabel Olsen on September 6, 1952. “Patt,” to his wife and family, lived in Victoria and then moved to Cobble Hill in 1969. He enjoyed the outdoors, and volunteered at the local food bank delivering food, running errands, and growing vegetables in the garden. He was a volunteer for many events, parades, and marathons. He made climbing ropes for children’s outdoor play areas. He died too soon in 1994 at age sixty-two. Robert was a long-time member of The Legion.
