In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
HOPE, Laura Bernice (née BLACK) - It is hard to believe that it has been one year since our Mum passed away on February 3rd, 2022. Born in 1933 on a farm in Newmarket, Ontario, Laura experienced a big change from rural life when her family moved to Toronto in 1944. After graduating from Jarvis Collegiate Institute in 1953, Laura entered nurses training at Wellesley Hospital, graduating as an RN in 1956. To pursue her main area of interest in public health nursing she completed additional training and education at the University of Toronto, nursing administration at Dalhousie University and her BSc. in nursing at Mount Saint Vincent University. Laura had always enjoyed driving and she shared fond memories of travelling many miles across the country in her Volkswagen bug. In 1966 she joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a Nursing Sister where she met and married Donald Hope in April 1967. While still stationed in Halifax their two children, Janice and David were born. When Donald was posted to Victoria, the family took the summer of 1974 to travel across the country in a pop-up camping trailer. Surviving some camping misadventures and vehicle breakdowns they eventually made it to the pacific coast. An accomplished seamstress, Laura sewed many of her daughter's costumes for various dance recitals and Highland competitions. Having always loved the bagpipes she rarely missed an opportunity to enjoy a pipe band or lone piper playing Amazing Grace.
Predeceased by her parents Vera and William Black and her husband Donald Hope, Laura is survived by her siblings Mildred (Jack), Joe and Greta (Gary), daughter Janice (Michael) and son David, grandchildren Matthew and Jocelyn.
Laura's family held a private ceremony at sea in July 2022. She is dearly missed. (The Victoria Times Colonist, 03 Feb 2023)
