In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
SIMPKINS, Laurence Edwin (Ted) - It is with great sadness, disbelief and never-ending love; we share the passing of our dad, Ted Simpkins. After his courageous yearlong battle with pancreatic cancer, Ted passed away peacefully surrounded by family.
Predeceased by his mother Elsie Potter and his loving wife of 61 years Barb, whom he mourned and missed immeasurably since her passing in 2018.
Born in Calgary, AB to Elsie Powers, he lived and was raised by his grannie "Anne" in Lacombe, AB. At the age of 11 he moved to Edmonton, AB to live with his mother. He joined the C.N.R. at the ripe age of 14 and travelled the rails of western Canada till age of 17. Looking for a more secure career, he signed up for the Royal Canadian Military and enlisted in the "Navy" where he was stationed in Esquimalt and Pat Bay Victoria.
It was there he met his future wife Barbara Joan and they were married in May 1957. After five years in the Navy, Ted decided that it wasn't for him, he lovingly would say he "smartened up" and re-mustered into the RCAF, where he spent 25 years. After retiring for a day, he enlisted in the reserves where he spent another 15 years. His career highlight was bringing the "glider program" to Comox, BC. Ted, along with his wife, forged a military life moving to multiple provinces (BC, AB, Ont., NWT) as well as living in multiple countries (Germany, Cyprus, Egypt); all the while raising three children.
Ted had many passions including his love of old cars (first car'49 Ford 2dr coupe), anything railroads (CNR priority), radio club, yacht club, genealogy research, the Legion and more recently CVRV club. Ted would take lead positions in most organizations, spending hours contributing his time and knowledge. Upon retirement Ted and Barb continued to travel the world, jet-setting to tropical locations, taking river and ocean cruises as well as adventuring in their motorhome.
Ted had a wicked sense of humor and an even larger heart of gold. His weekly visits and calls where he would banter with his good friends Bob and Vern were always welcome. He would say they had been in his life since the "beginning of time".
Lovingly survived by his children Kim, Steve (Patty) and Kathy, four grandchildren Kari (Chris), Ryan (Tash), Amy (Mike), Ashley and two great-grand daughters Tenley and Tegan, his younger sister Debra June (Laird), nieces, nephews, many cousins, and his daughter Shannon.
Anyone who knew Ted, knew he loved his family and was proud of all their accomplishments. He left his mark on everyone he crossed paths with, quietly helping out, lending a hand, ear or opinion. He was our walking encyclopedia.
A special thank you to Dr. Matous, Ted's home care staff, his palliative care team and all the staff at the CV. Hospice. You all hold a special place in our hearts.
At this time in lieu of flowers, a donation to CV Hospice on Ted's behalf is welcome. A celebration of life will be held in the future.
Till we meet again. " Safe seas sailor, soar high and free, it's your time to rest now." (The Victoria Times Colonist 28 Jan 2023)
