In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
HOLLAND, James Gilbert, Dr. - 71, Halifax. Passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Dr. Clyde W. and Mona (Hughes) Holland. He attended Dalhousie University where he graduated with a B.Sc with first class honors and the University Medal in Biology. He then attended Medical school and graduated with an MD degree and he was awarded the University Gold Medal in Medicine. His father had received the same medal 40 years earlier. This was the first time father and son received this medal in Dalhousie's history. Following post graduate training in Halifax, Montreal and Toronto, he returned to Halifax and joined the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie. During his years at Dalhousie he received many awards for teaching excellence, including on two occasions ,the Silver Shovel Award, which is given by the graduating class to the Professor of the Year. He was a member of the medical staff of the Victoria General Hospital and the Halifax Infirmary. He was also the Director of the Pulmonary Function Lab in both institutions. He was the founder of the Hyperbaric Unit of the VGH. He was a member of the Naval reserve for 35 years, retiring as Surgeon Commander in 1989. In 1998 he was employed by Atlantic Offshore Medical Inc. which led him to new adventures at sea. He was admitted to the Order of St John in 1987. He was also awarded the Carnegie and Rockefeller Professor Award in 2001. As a young man he played the pipe organ and saxophone. He was a founding member of the Dalhousie Medical Tupper Band. He was a life member of St Matthews United Church where he served as an elder. Jim loved his Scotty dogs, and worked with Scotty Rescue. Though a man of so many distinguished awards and experiences he always remained humble, caring and sensitive to all he encountered. We will all miss him dearly. He is survived by his wife, Christine Anne (Reyno); two stepdaughters, Elizabeth and Selena; brother, Dennis (Pat), River John and stepgrandchildren, Josh, Jordan, Cally, Blaine, and Noah. Also two nieces, Karen (Riley) and Sara (Rod Weir) Holland; nephew, David (Catherine) Holland; great-niece and nephew, Holly and Mark. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, February 3, 2009 and memorial service to be held Wednesday, February 4 at 2 p.m. in St Matthew's United Church, Halifax, Rev. Ross Bartlett officiating. Interment in Camphill Cemetery. Family flowers only, donations may be made to St. Matthew's Music Fund or charity of choice.
