Archibald George Wares (Archie) Lamont

LAMONT, Archibald George Wares (Archie), B.A.SC., M.SC. - Died May 21, 2009 at Sunnybrook Hospital Veteran's Wing; Archie was a Lieutenant (Engineer) in the RCNVR during WWII. Born 9 April 1921. Leaves wife, Claire Jones; two children, Dale (Lorne Perry) and Jim (Marina O'Grady-Lamont); three loving grandchildren, Alissa and Laurence Perry and Catherine Lamont. Archie was a brilliant engineer and artisan, a humble man of great integrity who loved life and never ceased to be creative and curious about the world and committed to the belief that people working together could do great things. He and Claire split their time between Picton and Toronto after he retired from Hatch where he was a co-founder and Vice President. A service will be held at St. Andrew's United Church, 117 Bloor Street East, Toronto on Tuesday June 2 at 1 p.m. Visitation one hour prior. Interment Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Donations to Toronto Rehab Foundation (439 University Ave., Toronto, M5G 1Y8) would be appreciated in lieu of flowers.

 


 

Archie served as an engineer on various ships in the Atlantic from 1943 through 1945. Archie also published a book covering the duration of his service, in 2002, not long before he died. "Guns Above, Steam Below - in Canada's Navy of WW II" is a 171 page book includes many notes and stories; he reproduced some cartoons by compatriots; and includes many photographs - both from within the belly of various ships, and from on deck.  Archie's book was based on extensive and detailed daily diaries he maintained. Stories about ships include HMCS COBALT; HMCS QU'APPELLE; and HMCS Warrior. Included are notes on the grounding of HMCS SKEENA, along with notes and stories on other ships of the period which Archie's career touched on.
