Lieutenant-Commander, RCN

Born: 1915

IVANY, Hedley Gordon - Energy, Enthusiasm, Vision, Compassion. It is with great sadness at the loss but profound thankfulness for his life that we announce the passing of Hedley Ivany on May 27, 2005, in Northwood Manor.

The broad strokes of his life reveal great swaths of service - the Navy, local politics, Kiwanis, The Salvation Army, and Northwood. His energy and enthusiasm were infectious. He dreamed big dreams and made them happen. He truly cared for people. Born in the outport of Portland, NL, he would travel the world. Even though he had a private audience with the Pope, entertained the Queen of England, and rubbed shoulders with the powerful and influential, he never lost his passion for people. Driven by this passion to help others, his accomplishments were endless, including being a lifelong member of The Salvation Army, a retired Lieutenant-Commander, Royal Canadian Navy, a past Alderman and Deputy Mayor of Halifax and past Chairman of Finance, Planning and Safety Committees for the City of Halifax.

He was a driving force behind Northwood; an honourary Governor of Northwood; First Senior of the Year, with the award now named in his honour; past President of Halifax Senior Citizens Housing Corporation; past Governor Kiwanis District of Eastern Canada and Caribbean; past President of Queen Elizabeth Home and School Association; former Director of the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Fund; past Director of Royal Canadian Legion Branch, Cornwallis No. 13; past Board Member of Abbie J. Lane Memorial Building, QEII; past Member of the Halifax Board of Trade; Canadian Club, United Services Institute, Mayflower Curling Club, Masonic Lodge and The Salvation Army Advisory Board.

Hedley was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife, Christina, in 1996, and by his daughter, Shelley Nadine Zinck, in 2003.

He is survived by his daughter, Helen Ivany Parker (John); grandchildren, Derek Spillner (Dina), Jason Spillner (Sonia), Chrystal Risley (Stephen), Cynthia Veuger (Dave), Kelley Zinck (Adrian), Kerry Zinck (Chris); great-grandchildren, Adam, Graham, Angela, Connor, Lucas, Calista, Kya and Alexander. Hedley is also survived by his brother, Colonel Calvin Ivany (Marion), Brampton, Ont.; sister, Lily Nordstrom, Saint John, N.B.; several nieces and nephews.

He will be deeply missed by a wealth of many friends. Friends will be received in Snow's Funeral Home, Windsor Street, Halifax, for visitation from 7-9 p.m. today and 2-4, 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31.

Funeral service will be held in The Salvation Army Citadel, Barrington Street, on Wednesday, June 1, at 11 a.m. Reception to follow immediately.

Committal service in Fairview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Salvation Army or the Northwood Foundation.

Though he has left us physically, his memory burns brightly in our hearts and minds. His legacy will shine for years to come. (The Halifax Chronicle-Herald 30 May 2005)
