CHESTER NEWS - Walter Saunders, of H.M.C.N., Halifax, spent the week-end at his home. (Wednesday, March 19, 1941 Bridgewater Bulletin and South Shore Record Page Eight)

 

John Walter Saunders, of Lunenburg, passed away suddenly at his home on Green St., on August 29th, at the age of 65. He was born in Halifax, the son of the late Christopher and Mary Saunders, and had lived in Lunenburg County for the past 25 years. Fifteen years ago he came to Lunenburg to join the staff of Lunenburg Foundry and Engineering Ltd. as salesman covering the Atlantic Provinces and for the past five years with Russell-Hipwell as a salesman of marine supplies. Besides his wife Evelyn, he is survived by seven sons and three daughters: Walter, Royal Canadian Army, Edmonton; Joseph, Royal Canadian Navy, Chester; Bruce, Montreal; Earl, Royal Canadian Navy; Lawrence, Sydney; Russell and Evan, Lunenburg; Dorothy (Mrs. William Baker), Halifax; Frances (Mrs. Roger Hill), Dartmouth; Wanda (Mrs. Gordon Prince), Lunenburg, and Ruth (Mrs. John White), Ketch Harbour, and Dorothy (Mrs. Paul Guerin), Guelph, Ont. There are thirty great-grandchildren. Mr. Saunders was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Mahone Bay, the I.O.O.F. Lunenburg, and of Branch No. 23, Royal Canadian Legion. The funeral was held from St. Andrew;s Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, September 1st, with Rev. R. G. R. Webber conducting the service. Interment was in Hillcrest Cemetery. John's sons, Joseph Edward (Joe) Saunders and Earle Saunders also served in the RCN.
