Algeo Lloyd Anderson, O.B.E., V.D.

Born: 17 May 1895, Victoria Road, Ontario

 

Died: 07 Dec 1959, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

 

ANDERSON, Algeo Lloyd - was appointed to HMCS AVALON as Base Medical Officer 19 Jun 1941 as a Surgeon Commander, RCNVR. He was appointed Surgeon Captain in 1944.

 

Born  17 May 1895, Victoria Road, Ontario.  Victoria Road is an unincorporated community in the Canadian province of Ontario, located within the municipality of Kawartha Lakes. The village was built around a station on the Toronto and Nipissing Railway, which was constructed in 1872. He died 07 Dec 1959 in Saskatoon, SK and is buried in the Woodland Cemetery, Saskatoon.

 

Citation for award of OBE: ANDERSON, Alego Lloyd, Surgeon Captain, VD, Officer - Order of the British Empire (OBE) - RCNVR / Senior Naval Medical Officer Newfoundland Command; now Senior Canadian Medical Officer in the U.K. - Awarded as per Canada Gazette of 16 June 1945 and London Gazette of 14 June 1945. "This officer has been an outstanding member of the Royal Canadian Volunteer Reserve since 1924, having served as Senior Medical Officer in the Pacific, Canadian Northwest Atlantic and Newfoundland Commands. At present, Surgeon Captain Anderson is the Senior Canadian Naval Medical Officer in the United Kingdom. In 1941, Captain Anderson undertook the organization of the Medical services in Newfoundland, and through his energy, foresight and devotion to duty, he developed a very extensive medical organization of the highest calibre. During the period when the Battle of the Atlantic was at its height, his handling of various emergencies ashore, arising from the large number of survivors, was in keeping with the highest traditions of his profession and the Naval Service."
