In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
MEAHAN, Francis Anthony - It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Francis Anthony Meahan, one month to the day after celebrating his 101st birthday on January 11, 2022, at Ridgewood Veterans Wing. He was surrounded by the love of his family when he passed away on the very day that would have been his 79th wedding anniversary. Francis was born in Saint John, NB on December 11, 1920, to the late Joseph and Ida (Fowler) Meahan and was the loving husband of over 75 years to his wife, the late Arneita (Newell) Meahan who also passed away at the age of 101 in 2018.
Frank began his working career as a member of the Royal Canadian Navy in the Second World War as an Able Body Seaman. After the War, he took a job with CN Rail, and worked there until he retired. Along with Arneita, Frank enjoyed bowling, and keeping active by skating and playing ball. He and Arneita enjoyed travelling to Florida, Myrtle Beach, Quebec and BC. They enjoyed camping at Pine Cone Campground for many years, forming a lot of lasting relationships there. In his later years at Ridgewood, he enjoyed playing cards with Scotty, Stirling, Nancy and his long-time neighbourhood friend, Frank who would come and bring his crib board. He so appreciated his new friendships that he made at Ridgewood. They made a huge difference in his life and made his last years so much more enjoyable. Like his wife, he lived his life to the fullest and was still going very strong even into his 101st year, before acquiring a blood infection that weakened him incredibly, ultimately leading to his passing. He loved his family deeply and was loved by them all in return. He was able to be here to see all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren be born, and one of his great grandchildren has almost reached the age of 30. He was blessed to be able to be here for all of these years but will still be deeply missed by his family. We will all miss that Irish twinkle in his eye and his quick wit. He went deeply loved.
Frank is survived by his daughters; Cheryl Riley of Saint John and Donna (Jim) Neale of Ottawa; his five precious grandchildren; Sherril, Kim, Jennifer, Patrick and John, 10 cherished great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
As the last surviving member of his immediate family, in addition to his parents and his wife, Arneita; he was predeceased by his siblings, Gerald, Bobby, Gregory, Rita, Katherine, Bertha and Shirley.
His family would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Williamson and the staff of Ridgewood Veterans Wing for the care and compassion you have shown to not just Frank, but to his family during the duration of his stay with you. You are all so appreciated, and we are forever grateful to you. We would also like to thank Lorraine and Barry, his special niece and her husband, Peggy, his sister-in-law, and faithful friends, Francis and Bernice, for their constant help and support to our family.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424). A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2022 at 11am from the Fundy Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in Ocean View Memorial Gardens.
