In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
PHELAN, James Patrick (Jim) - Age 81 of Meteghan, formerly of Little Brook, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in New Glasgow, he was the eldest son of the late Anthony and Georgina (Fleming) Phelan.
He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy “Dot”; son, Robert; brothers, Jack, David (in infancy); sisters, Joyce, Margie, Fran.
Jim is survived by his son, Brian (Helen McCullough), Dawson City, Yukon; daughter, Trish (Fred) Carde, Springhill; sisters, Theresa Fitzner, Halifax; Barb (Pete) Trepanier, Gatineau, Quebec; grandchildren, Sam Phelan and Kara (à Kim) Jacquard.
Jim joined the Royal Canadian Navy at 17 and served 26 years, retiring in 1984. Work life wasn’t over for him, though, and after the Navy he sold insurance, drove an oil truck, and was the secretary for the local Legion; among many other jobs. The Legion played a large part in Jim’s life and he, along with his wife Dot, volunteered at many of their local events.
Jim loved his time with family. When his children were young the family always had a great time. They would camp, go to road races, and visit extended family. The addition of grandchildren in Jim’s life gave him more opportunity for family time. Watching his grandson grow into a wonderful young man and visiting him in the Yukon was always special. Spending time with his granddaughter brought joy to his life as she was his bright light.
Jim was an avid runner, participating in local and regional races in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. In later years, when Jim was no longer running, he could be seen walking the roads in Clare.
Jim will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Meteghan Funeral Home. A private graveside service will be held at a later date followed by burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Church Point.
Donations in Jim’s memory may be made to Wags Boarding Kennels, Church Point, NS. (Meteghan Funeral & Cremation Services)
