In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
MANN, John Douglas - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Douglas Mann in Calgary, Alta., June 21, 2016, after a brief illness at the age of 81. He was a son of Norman and Effie Mann (deceased) (of Niagara Fall, Ont.) and was predeceased by brothers, Reg (Sally) and Bob (Jean). He was also predeceased by the great love of his life Elizabeth "Liz". He leaves behind daughter, Sherry (Mark); grandchildren, Ryan and Andrea (Ryan) and his beloved great-grandchildren, Emily and Danielle. As well, daughter, Janice (Charleen) and grandchildren, Hailey, Dylan, Jessica, Geo and Michael mourn his passing. John is also survived by many nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces. He was a 26 year veteran of the Royal Canadian Navy stationed in Shelburne and ultimately Dartmouth and upon his retirement worked many years in the Civil Service running the Maritime Warfare School computer centre. As his careers show, he was a devoted and very intelligent man whose curiosity and perfectionism spurred him to excel at whatever he did whether it be a home project or a complex problem. He did love to tinker with things and he was very good at it! Over his life, he dove headlong into whatever he was enjoying at the time - at times he was a voracious reader and a lover of movies. John and Liz moved to Calgary to enjoy family time after his retirement from the Civil Service in 1996 and they resided there until their passing. I am sure all who knew John knew him to be a doting and devoted husband to Liz as well as an excellent father, grandfather and a very proud great-grandfather. John has been cremated as per his request and it is worth noting that John's wishes are to be returned to Niagara Falls. His first job was on the iconic Maid of the Mist there and I think he felt compelled to return to an area he loved so much in life. (The Halifax chronicle-Herald, Friday, 25 Jun 2016)
