HAND, Robert Frederick C.D., M.B., Ch.B., F.R.C.S.(C) MD - 101, of Sherborn, MA. Born June 29, 1912 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England and passed away May 14, 2014 at The Stone Institute of Newton, MA.
Loving husband of the late Pauline (Sims) of Croxley Green, England, and the son of the late Thomas Wilton and Sarah Marsh Gillot Hand of Sheffield, England.
Frederick is survived by his four children; Douglas Frederick Wallace Murphy of Croydon, England; Miranda Hand Spilios of Sherborn, MA; Dr. Gordon Hand of Newcastle, NH; Richard Hand of Portugal and ten grand children; Plato Spilios of Roxbury, MA; Penelope Spilios Courtin of Sherborn, MA; Lisa Hand Cicero of San Diego, CA; Jill Hand Wimsatt of Toronto; Victoria and Mary Hand of Newcastle, NH; Meredith and Alyse Hand of Halifax, N.S.; Sherry Murphy McIntosh and the late Leslie Murphy of Croydon, England. Eleven great-grandchildren, Caleb and Eden Spilios of Framingham, MA; Brendan and Alexander Wimsatt of Toronto; Rose and the late Luca Cicero of San Diego, CA; Frederic Courtin of Sherborn, MA; Ruby Hand of New Castle, NH; Phoebe Spilios of Roxbury, MA; Sophie McIntosh, Maximillian and Daniel Murphy of Croydon, England.
He was predeceased by his two brothers, George Hand of Sheffield England and Thomas Hand of Singapore. He was known as “Fred” by his family and friends.
He graduated from the King Edward VII School-Sheffield, England; University of Sheffield (Engineering-one year); University of Glasgow Medical School, London School of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene; Certification in Otolaryngology & Tulane and Emory University Medical Schools; American Board Certification in Ophthalmology.
He has a long and distinguished career in the military serving two nations- Great Britain and Canada (29 years). He served in the British Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve from 1934-1948 (14 years) and active duty 1939-1945. He was decorated with: 1939 Star, Battle of Atlantic Star, Battle of Britain Star and Victory Medal. He joined the Canadian Navy from 1948-1963 (15 years) and was decorated with the Canada Service Medal.
Upon retirement he went into private medical practice (1963-1981). Fred grew up in Sheffield, England, youngest of three sons and the family’s talents and fortunes were tied to engineering. He spent three post war years in Britain where he continued post graduate studies in Otolaryngology. He immigrated to Canada in 1948; from 1981 onwards, he and his wife spent the winters in Naples, FL. He was an avid and talented gardener. His garden in Halifax, N.S. was featured in Canadian Times Magazine and his award winning roses once featured in Canadian Reader’s Digest.
His home was purchased by a descendant of the Crane family, Ipswich, MA. He was featured in the “Naples Daily News” regarding his gardening talents. He belonged to the Hibiscus Society in Naples. He was an avid reader and tennis player and belonged to tennis clubs in Britain. He was a dedicated physician and taught at Dalhousie Medical School.
He lived in Sherborn from 2009 onwards with his daughter Miranda, later joined by his granddaughter Penelope and great grandson, Freddy. He was Sherborn’s oldest resident.
He attributes his health and longevity to his gardening. He took great pleasure in the beauty of the Sherborn surroundings and grew very close to the household Akita Maiya, which led to his contributions to the ASPCA, Defenders of Wildlife, Animal Rescue League of Boston, World Wildlife Fund, Mass Audubon Society, National Geographic Society, and the National Institute for the Blind.
Fred’s professional medical associations and societies include College of Physicians & Surgeons of Nova Scotia, Canadian Medical Association, Doctor’s of Nova Scotia, Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada, Canadian Ophthalmological Society, American Academy of Ophthalmology, Emory University Eye Alumni, American Certification in Ophthalmology Board, The Royal Society of Medicine. His general associations and clubs included, Nova Scotia Naval Officer’s Association, Federal Superannuates National Association, The Dalhousie University Club, Royal Commonwealth Society, Royal Nova Scotia Historical Society, Atlantic Symphony, U.S. Retired Officers Association, Saraguay Club, Mason.
Fred’s family wish this extraordinary man, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather an eternal life of joy and happiness.
A memorial service will be held at Saint Andrews Church, Wellesley, MA on Wednesday May 21, 2014, at 3PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made Perkins School for the Blind, 175 North Beacon St., Watertown, MA 02472 or a charity of your choice. (Robert F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Homes)
